When the Fonte del castagno was built in Sinalunga, ingenious hydraulic pipes were laid to bring water to the castle. The sense of achievement must have been great, not to mention the ingenuity, however, since a plaque was placed in plain sight, which read: “AD 1265 from there they perforated the work”. Since the castle was often under siege, this proud declaration about the work was the best way to make it clear how the fortress could be conquered with very little effort. All that was required was to shut the spring off, dry the pipeline and wait for those under siege to surrender.
