Abbey of Santa Maria

The ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria Assunta (St Mary Assumption), known as the “Conventaccio”, founded in 1109, can be found on the road below Montefollonico which leads to Gracciano. It was destroyed many times by Orvieto and Poliziano, it was passed to the Augustinian monks who rebuilt it (1250) although it was soon taken over again by the Cistercian monks. Only a few ruins remain, but some Romanesque sculptures are preserved in Montefollinico in what was the church of San Bartolomeo (St Bartholomew).
